The times are tough for the world’s biggest toymaker, Mattel. A long-term decline in sales of the Barbie dolls, which dropped by 20 per cent from 2012 to 2014, appears to be continuing. In 2016, Barbie sales had risen for the first three quarters, helped by new marketing efforts and the launch of dolls in a variety of skin tones and body shapes. However, a few days ago Mattel has reported net and gross sales down 15 %, with operating loss of $127 m, in the first quarter of the year. Barbie sales declined 13 %, falling for the second straight quarter. Executives said this year’s weakness was on account of an inventory overhang and expressed confidence about the brand going forward.
From the customer’s perspective, it seems like Mattel is putting a lot of effort into reviving the Barbie brand. The amount of new dolls in the stores is huge and the variety of not only skin tones and body shapes, but also professions, clothes and accessories is incredible. You can choose from a curvy, tall or petite Barbie Fashionistas, a mermaid or a fairy from Dreamtopia, a doctor or a firefighter from the Barbie Careers line and many more dolls, and for all of the above you can get a fashion or accessory packs, and you can also get a Barbie dollhouse and additional furniture sets for it. There are also new Barbie Made to Move: a martial artist, a soccer player and a skateboarder. I think that you can easily find something for everybody and based on what I’ve seen in stores in Switzerland, I think that kids and their parents still go first to the Barbie section when they want to pick up a doll. It’s probably the same when purchasing dolls online, for example on Amazon or eBay.
As you may know, I am a big fan of the Made to Move Barbies because of their exceptional articulation. I’ve already reviewed Barbie MTM Redhead and Blonde dolls and I like them a lot. I got the Brunette one together with the Blonde doll on sale at Migros and I was planning on using both of them as body donors for my Barbie Fashionistas dolls but for now I am keeping them as they are. Barbie Made to Move Brunette has nice brown hair, brown eyes and pink lips. She has a darker skin tone than the Redhead and the Blonde dolls and she was originally wearing the same clothes but in different colors. She is currently wearing a princess dress, which you will be able to see on my Instagram soon.

Nadeszły ciężkie czasy dla największego na świecie producenta lalek firmy Mattel. Wydaje się, że postępuje długoterminowy spadek sprzedaży lalek Barbie, która zmalała o 20 procent w latach 2012-2014. W 2016 roku sprzedaż Barbie wzrosła w pierwszych trzech kwartałach dzięki nowym działaniom marketingowym i wprowadzeniu lalek o różnych odcieniach skóry i kształtach ciała. Z perspektywy konsumenta, wygląda na to, że Mattel bardzo się stara ożywić markę Barbie. Ilość nowych lalek w sklepach jest ogromna, a różnorodność nie tylko odcieni skóry i kształtów ciała, ale także zajęć, ubrań i akcesoriów jest niesamowita. Możesz wybierać spośród krągłej, wysokiej lub drobnej Barbie Fashionistas, syrenki lub wróżki z Dreamtopii, lekarza lub strażaka z serii Barbie Kariery i wielu, wielu innych, a dla wszystkich powyższych lalek możesz dokupić zestawy strojów lub akcesoriów oraz domek dla lalek Barbie i dodatkowe zestawy mebli do niego. Niedawno pojawiły się również nowe lalki z serii Made to Move: zawodnik sztuk walki, piłkarz oraz deskorolkarz. Myślę, że z łatwością można znaleźć coś dla każdego i na podstawie tego, co widziałam w szwajcarskich sklepach sądzę, że zarówno dzieci jak i rodzice jeśli chcą kupić lalkę, to wciąż w pierwszej kolejności idą do działu Barbie.
Jak zapewne wiesz, jestem wielką fanką lalek Barbie Made to Move ze względu na ich wyjątkową ruchomość. Do tej pory zrecenzowałam Rudowłosą i Blondynkę z tej serii i bardzo mi się podobały. Kupiłam Brunetkę razem z Blondynką podczas wyprzedaży w Migrosie i miałam zamiar użyć ich jako dawców ciał dla moich lalek z serii Barbie Fashionistas, ale na razie utrzymuję je w oryginalnym stanie. MTM Brunetka ma ładne brązowe włosy, brązowe oczy i różowe usta. Ma ciemniejsza karnację w porównaniu do Rudowłosej i Blondynki, i początkowo miała na sobie taki sam strój jak pozostałe lalki z tej serii tylko w innym kolorze. Obecnie moja Brunetka ma na sobie sukienkę księżniczki, którą już niedługo będziecie mogli zobaczyć na moim Instagramie.
